Unique Adaptations

Gila monsters are mostly active during brief periods in spring and during monsoon season.

Gila monsters survive in an extremely harsh environment in ways unique from any other animal. Whether we are trying to better understand how they fit into this environment or trying to stimulate them to breed in captivity, understanding these unique adaptations is the key to our success.

Gilas seem to be a crawling contradiction. They love water, but occupy some of the most arid places on the planet. They require relatively cool temperatures, but live in the searing heat of the Sonoran Desert. These apparent incongruities begin to make sense when we understand their unique solution to survival.
