Pancho Gila Hook - Copperhead Series™ - Field Length
The Balanced & Rugged Hook
Available in both a cage-length and in a longer field-length, the Copperhead Series reptile hooks are lightweight, strong, and designed to take abuse. The hook end is rugged and corrosion resistant 304 stainless steel. A unique solid brass ferrule reduces the weight of the front end and keeps the instrument extremely well-balanced. The shaft is chrome plated tempered steel for lightness and durability. A high quality textured rubber grip provides great control. Overall, it's an affordable hook made with the attention to detail that will make it a joy to use for years to come.
I made my first reptile hook from an old golf club in the 1970's. I've carried that hook on many exciting adventures in the field and it continues to be my go-to field hook all these years later. However, I think that's changed.
Recently, I've revisited the design with the goal of offering a high quality, yet affordable reptile hook. Although designing around golf club components supports the affordable part of the equation, there is a problem with this approach. Golf club shafts are designed for golf clubs, not for reptile hooks. If the hook end is sized to fit the end of the club shaft, it is much larger than needed for strength. The result is a hook that is too heavy on the front end and poorly balanced in the hand. One solution is to go with a lighter material. Titanium is too expensive and aluminum is not durable enough. There are plenty of hooks already available elsewhere if you want to accept these compromises. I needed a better solution.
After experimenting with many approaches, I designed a solid brass ferrule that provides an elegant solution to the problem. In fact, this one design change reduces the weight of the hook end by 55%! The result is a hook that is much better balanced in the hand, yet more than strong enough to hold up to the rigors of years of use. Since I individually machine each ferrule, this part adds significantly to the manufacturing costs, but the result is a hook worthy of the Pancho Gila™ name.

Photo Color Accuracy
Each animal sale photo has been color calibrated to a standard to accurately represent the color of each animal. Consumer computer monitors aren't consistently good at accurately displaying colors. The color on your monitor may not be accurate, but each image is individually calibrated to be accurate.
Gila Monster Color
All Gila monsters change color as they mature. Babies are yellow or cream on black. As they mature the light color will develop colors ranging from orange to pink. It's not possible to predict the adult color based on the color of the baby. The color of the parents will give some indication of what color to expect as the baby matures, but there can be significant variation in the mature color even in a single clutch. It usually takes several years for the adult color to fully develop.
Gila Monster Sex
It is not possible to accurately determine the sex of immature Gila monsters from their appearance. Some baby Gila monsters show characteristics of their sex at hatching or as they start to grow. However, this is not a consistently reliable way to determine sex. I may give my impression of sex in the description, but consider this just an educated guess.
As a Gila monster approaches maturity it can be reliably sexed by ultrasound. If the animal for sale is old enough to sex with ultrasound, I'll state the sex for certain and guarantee that it is accurate.

Rating: 5I have the Pancho Gila Field Hook and I must say it is amazing! Very durable and lightweight. I love how the brass ferrule improves the strength of the shaft + hook where they attach, as that is where the shaft tends to crack on reptile hooks. Thanks again, Doc!
Rating: 5I am extremely impressed with the quality of these hooks. Mark has done a tremendous job with these and I am looking forward to taking them out in the field to use.
Rating: 5I have known Mark for about 20 years and he never ceases to amaze me with the innovative ideas he comes up with. I now own two of his hooks and they are absolutely the best on the market, period. In the next few weeks I will be putting the copperhead to task out in the field and am positive it will out perform my 40 years of hooks collecting. Lightweight but strong enough to endure anything I put to it. The construction is amazing, built like a tank. For the price, you cant find anything else on the market. like it.
Rating: 5I was fortunate to get all three of the pancho line hooks and I must say im extremely pleased with these hooks. I can't wait to get this one out in the field, a little longer than most which makes me very happy! The extra reach not only helps in saftey from the mouth of the herp in the field but also helps save your back from constantly bending over. I cannot say enough about the balancing of these hooks, the buisness end is so light which makes maneuvering like a breeze! I guess you have to hold it in your hand to understand!
